Getting Involved at Edwin Hodges
Did you know that at Edwin Hodges Ministry, over 10,000,000 pounds of Christian literature have been received from all over the country since 1994? Did you know that in 2007 alone, over 27,000,000 pieces were distributed? Did you know that literature in 112 different languages has been shipped to over 140 countries on six different continents? Did you know that you can be involved in this wonderful ministry of delivering God’s Word around the world? Here’s how: Be a literature gatherer—collect and deliver new or used literature for the ministry Be a prayer partner Be a financial supporter Join us for our periodic work days at Edwin Hodges Ministry. We meet at the ministry at 8:30 a.m. for a day of work and fellowship. Lunch is always provided.
Getting Involved at CCC The Committee on Church Cooperation (CCC) was organized in 1973. The executive board, led by President Tommy Sharp, is made up of members representing a cross section of denominations. The CCC espouses no particular denomination or teach-ing in dealing with clients. The staff simply exhibits a caring philosophy, which encompasses Christian principles, and has as its goal to help those in need find immediate assistance. The CCC's mission is "building cooperative efforts among the churches of Morgan County to provide emergency and short-term assistance to persons in need in the name of Christ." The CCC offers the following services: Emergency Food Pantry Clothing Closet Prescription Medication Program Traveler's Aid School Supplies Holiday Sponsorships Aid to Burnout Victims and New Move-Ins Home Health Assistance Infant/Child Assistance How can you help? Be a prayer partner Be a financial supporter Be a volunteer at the warehouse or in the store For more information on how you can be involved, call 256-355-8893.
Southside is involved in an ongoing mission project at Belize Vocational-Technical School associated with Global Outreach. The school, located in Belmopan, is a boarding school for boys ages 14-18. The boys attend school for three years and learn the Bible, math, and reading. In addition, they are taught the trades of auto mechanics, small engine repair, woodworking, and carpentry and whatever else it takes to keep the school running. Several teams have gone down and been involved in construction projects as well as revival services and Vacation Bible Schools. This past January, our team, led by Berry Terry, laid concrete foundations for buildings which will house future ministry teams. Next January, another team of around 21 members will head to Belize to help in the construction of a temporary dorm for the boys and will also upgrade the drinking water system for the school. The cost to send each team member is around $1,300 and the projects themselves will cost $16-18,000 for a total cost of around $44,000. How can you help? Volunteer to go with us Be a prayer partner Be a financial supporter—we are asking 100 people to give $100. 35 people have responded to date. For more information on how you can be involved, see Berry Terry or Bro. Ben.
Getting Involved in Oneida, Kentucky Just as Southside is involved in an ongoing mission project in Belize, under the leadership of Berry Terry, the church has partnered with the Oneida Baptist Institute in Oneida, Kentucky. Like Belize, Oneida Baptist Institute is a boarding school. Unlike Belize, it is a school for boys and girls in grades 6-12 with an average enrollment of 500 students and a staff of approximately 150. While the institute receives about 9% of its funding from Kentucky Southern Baptists, the majority of their finances comes from individuals, churches, and other groups. Virtually every student receives financial aid in the form of a full or partial scholarship because the Institute services an extremely poor population. No student is ever turned away who has a legitimate financial need. Oneida has a reputation for accepting students who are having difficulty in the public school system. Some have family problems. Others are struggling academically, but even so, 60% of their graduates go on to college or other institutions of higher learning. All students are required to take one year of Bible class, attend chapel each school day, and attend Sunday School and Worship every Lord‟s Day. As a result, the majority of students leave the Institute as Christians. How can you help? Volunteer to go with us May 31- June 5, 2009. The cost is $60 per team member. Be a prayer partner For more information on how you can be involved, see Berry Terry or Bro. Ben.
Metamorphosis Metamorphosis is a local mission trip from June 9-13 in which local student ministries, in cooperation with StudentNet of Morgan County, will partner together with the City of Decatur to transform our community for Christ. During the week, students will help in landscaping yards, cleaning away debris, building wheelchair ramps, cleaning rain gutters, and repairing fences. Not only will students be able to meet great physical needs in our community, but also they will be able to share the love of Christ and the good news of His salvation. How can you help? Pray for the safety and success of our Metamorphosis team. Volunteer to help our youth during the week. Offer to provide a scholarship ($25 per student) to help our students serve. For more information, see our Minister to Students, Cliff Lewis.
Family Ministry Night Beginning June 3 and continuing through the Summer months, we did visitation differently so that we could involve more people. If you wanted a visitation assignment for a person that you could contact by letter, phone, or visit at your convenience, you could contact the church office. On Tuesday evening, our format changed. Met at 5:30 p.m. for sandwich and chip supper. For the whole family. At 6:00 p.m., we went prayerwalking around neighborhoods close to the church. We also passed out brochures and left doorknockers on doors—taking the opportunity to speak to people outside their homes. The benefits of this type of visitation are Exercise, Ministry as a family, Fellowship, and Teaching our kids how to minister. If you are interested in participating, please call the church office to sign up or send an e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . We need you to register so that we can have an accurate count for the meal. |
